I’m excited to share this interview with Richard Reynolds, a talented Yorkshire-based magician who has built a brilliant reputation for bringing fun, energy and unforgettable moments to weddings across the region. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your business.
I’m Rich Reynolds, and I’ve been a professional wedding magician for over 10 years. I’m lucky enough to perform at more than 100 weddings every year, which still feels a bit surreal.
My interest in magic started about 17 years ago, but the turning point came in 2015 when I left my job and went backpacking around South East Asia. While I was travelling, I performed for locals and other travellers, and it hit me that this was what I really wanted to do. When I got back to the UK, I decided to pursue it properly and I haven’t looked back.
What inspired you to work in the wedding industry specifically?
A friend asked me to perform at their wedding, it was my first proper big event, and I had eight months to get ready. The day went really well, and soon after, some of the guests got in touch to book me for their own events.
What struck me most was how special it felt to be part of someone’s wedding day. There’s this unique, emotional atmosphere, and it’s an honour when a couple chooses you to help make it memorable for their family and friends.
How would you describe your style or approach to your work?
I’d say approachable and friendly. I’ve always disliked magicians who come across as smug or trying to outsmart people, so I made a conscious decision early on to avoid that.
I want guests to feel invited into something amazing rather than just “fooled”. The aim is for everyone to leave smiling and genuinely surprised, not feeling like they’ve been tricked.
What part of your job do you love the most?
Obviously I love performing the material I’ve worked hard on over the years, but the best moments are always when I get a quiet few minutes alone with the bride and groom.
I show them a couple of special tricks that I don’t perform for anyone else that day. It’s just the three of us, no crowd, and it feels like a little private gift to them on their wedding day.
What do couples tend to appreciate most about working with you?
The feedback I get most often is that the magic went down really well and that their guests were properly amazed. That always means a lot because I’ve spent years refining what I do.
Beyond the tricks themselves, couples seem to appreciate that I’m relaxed and easy to be around. They know their family and friends will enjoy chatting with me rather than feeling awkward.

Tell us about a memorable wedding you’ve worked on.
There have been so many lovely moments over the years, but one that stands out was fairly recent. The groom asked if we could do their private tricks session in the huge sunken bathtub in their bridal suite at Goldsborough Hall.
So the three of us climbed in (fully clothed!), did some magic, and ended up with some really funny, unique photos. It was one of those spontaneous things that just made the day even more special for them.
What’s a common myth or misconception about your role that you’d love to clear up?
Quite a few people still think entertainment is something you can skip when planning a wedding, but I think that’s a shame — guests really appreciate something extra these days.
The other one is that magicians are mainly for children. I get where that idea comes from, but close-up magic at weddings is actually perfect for adults — the reactions from grown-ups are often the strongest.
If you could give one piece of advice to couples currently planning their wedding, what would it be?
Book the suppliers you really want as early as possible.
It’s easy to think you can sort things last-minute like you do with most things these days, but the best wedding suppliers — venues, photographers, bands, and yes, magicians — often get booked up a year or two in advance. If you leave it too late, you might miss out on the people you had your heart set on.
How do you stay inspired, creative, or motivated as a sole trader?
Honestly, if you’re not motivated in this line of work, you probably wouldn’t last very long. There are lots of great wedding suppliers out there, so you have to keep pushing yourself to stand out.
Part of it is the healthy pressure of knowing you need to keep delivering to stay booked, but mostly it comes from genuinely loving what I do. Every wedding is a chance to create something memorable, and I never take that for granted.
